Only by going through a thorough checklist will you have a full understanding of what you need, what you need to discuss, and what details will need to be covered.
Some of the questions on your checklist should include:
- Who is expected to use the car? Will you be traveling by yourself, such as on a business trip or personal vacation, or are you traveling with your entire family for a family vacation?
- How much luggage are you going to have? This is important. Does the car you are thinking about large enough to have you plus all your hand luggage and big suitcases? If this is a family vacation, you may have to consider a change to a mini van or a car with extra large trunk.
- Do you need a child seat? This is a detail that needs to be mentioned with your order. There is usually a shortage of these seats and they are provided for an extra charge.
- Do you actually need the car the first few days? If not, consider to take a taxi, a bus, a train, or the hotel shuttle to the city. This may be much cheaper and more efficient. When its time for you to go out of town and travel around, then rent the car from the city location.
- Are you going to a very warm and humid destination? If so, then you will want to make sure you have air conditioning. The same goes likewise. While obviously Alaska in the winter is not going to see very many travelers, if you happen to be going to a far north destination, make sure you rent a winterized vehicle that is equipped to handle the elements.
- What's the allowable mileage? Some car rental companies don't have a mileage standard, but others do. You don't want to drive 400 miles a day only to find out you get charged after 200.
